Job Description: Director of Youth Ministries

Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours a week; Wednesdays 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.; Sundays 9 a.m.noon; 10 hours planning, preparing. Will include taking youth to camp; 3-10 day mission trips; 2 weekend retreats and other special events.

General Purpose:

Provide leadership and coordination of all Middle School and High School youth ministries in cooperation with the Youth Council and Sr. Pastor.

Maintaining a balance of:

Spiritual Development

Leadership Development

Service and Mission Development

Recreation and Fellowship

District and Conference Events

Qualifications:

  1. At least 21 years of age.
  2. High School degree or the equivalent.
  3. Ability to create and resource a Leadership Team.
  4. Ability to work well with youth and their parents.
  5. Basic understanding of youth culture and needs.
  6. Commitment to Jesus Christ and the primary teachings of the United Methodist Church.
  7. Basic financial management.
  8. Ability to keep confidentiality.
  9. Commitment to Safe Sanctuary policy.

10)Able to pass OSB' background check. 1 1 )Provide satisfactory references.

Accountability:

The Director of Youth Ministries reports directly to the Pastor with the Staff/Parish Relations Committee overseeing this relationship.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate all youth events. This includes encouraging participation of parents, involving youth in planning activities, recruiting volunteers, providing transportation, providing food, providing adequate supervision.
  2. Attend Sunday worship services and coordinate "Youth Sunday".
  3. Recruit and coordinate teachers for the Middle School and High School Sunday School classes. (The Youth Director is not expected to teach all Sunday School and evening UMYF meetings.)
  4. Select age appropriate Discipleship making curriculum. Sensitive topics should be reviewed with the pastor prior to discussion with the youth—Separate Middle School and High School youth as needed for discussion.
  5. Assist Sr. Pastor in teaching Confirmation every other year. 6) Schedule and provide leadership for weekly youth meetings.
  1. Plan a mission project event each year.
  2. Encourage youth to attend conference camps and District Events. (Participation by the Director of Youth Ministries is encouraged. Registration to be paid by the church.)
  3. Schedule transportation to and from Summer Camps and District Retreats.

 10)Attend training events. (Registration to be paid by the church.)

1 1 )Attend Church Council meetings to report on youth activities.

12)Encourage youth through support of their extra-church activities (i.e. sports, music events, etc.).

13)Publicize youth activities through the church newsletter, Facebook, Website, fliers, calling, letters, cards.

14)Coordinate all youth events. This includes encouraging participation of parents, involving youth in planning activities, recruiting volunteers, providing transportation, providing food, providing adequate supervision.

15) Keep track of Youth Ministry expenses, staying with in the Church budget and the Youth Events funds.

16)Participate in Safe Sanctuary training and follow through with policy.

17)The Director of Youth Ministries will maintain CPR and First Aid certification.

Other General Expectations:

Attend to the safety of the youth through providing appropriate and adequate adult supervision, transportation, and securing release forms for anyone being transported off the church premises.

Provide adequate supervision for all activities. Adequate supervision is defined as maintaining appropriate adult to youth ratios.

The Director of Youth Ministries will be responsible for finding suitable substitutes during the occasion of his/her absence.

Due to the limited number of hours worked it will be unrealistic to think that the Director of Youth Ministries can be everywhere the church would like him/her to be; however, Sunday morning visibility seems critical.

Terms of Employment:

  1. Initial hiring is for a six- month period.
  2. Continue reemployment for a period of one year is renewable by mutual agreement between the Staff Parish Relations Committee and the employee so long as a fruitful relationship continues to exist.
  3. Salary and job performance will be reviewed each year.
  4. The Director of Youth Ministries will communicate with the pastor regarding timeoff. The Youth Director may take up to four Sundays off, not including absences due to youth retreats and trips, illness or family emergency.
